ARCADIA MUSIC CLUB President, Nanci Perkins called the meeting to order at 7:10 PM. Minutes: Minutes were approved as written. Director's Report: Tom Landes: Art Farr will be out for two weeks after having six stents put in a couple of his arteries. Mr. Landes gave out Mr. Farr's home phone number and address for those that wanted to send cards or call to wish him well. Wednesday, March 20 at 7:00 PM in the North Gym is the Orchestra 1 and II and Band 1, and II Spring Concert. Over 500 students will be performing and it is free! March 27 is the Band Vertical Concert at Citrus College. Prices are $6.00 adults and $5.00 students. Arcadia High School's Music Department is a proud member of the BRAVO Award. Mary Doherty wrote a 75-80-page application for this prestigious award. A trophy and a check for $5,000 will be divided up between 15 teachers. Tom Forbes is creating a flag to run up the school?s flagpole. This award is a credit to the teachers and students. Tom Forbes: Just returned from being invited to the 20th Anniversary Band Celebration in Australia. Had a wonderful time and enjoyed seeing old friends again. Commented on the great Benefit Dinner. 350 people attended and the students were marvelous. Thanked all the parents that made it possible. Orchestra Vertical Concert was excellent! A four student Quartet played Canon in D, a piece from the benefit dinner at the meeting as a thank you to all the parents for their support. They were fantastic! On April 17, 2002, the orchestra will leave for their performance in San Francisco. Brian for George Armenta: World Guard was in Las Vegas for the WGI competition. They came out in 4th place and ranked 12th in the Nation. A Guard went to Hayward for their regional competition and ranted first in the semi-finals and 3rd place in the finals. They are now ranked 14th place in the country. This weekend, both guards will be performing at Mission Viejo. Stella Chen, a member of the A Guard is in the hospital awaiting surgery to remove an embolism in a small blood vessel in her brain. The surgery will be at USC Medical Center. Our good wishes and hope for a speedy recovery goes to Stella and her family. April 3rd, the girls will be painting the World Guard floor, again, and could use volunteers. Kevin Sherrill: Percussion students are preparing for the Concert Band's Spring Show tomorrow. They will be performing with Band I, II and also with Band III at the Vertical Show. JV Percussion went to Las Vegas on March 9th and 10th. Kevin thanked Cathy and Mark Ryne for being the chaperones and Phil Consiglio for driving the truck. This WGI regional event was a learning experience for the JV students. However, they competed in the A Division and ranked 3rd in the Prelims and 4th in the Finals. They competed against "full-on" regular drum lines - stayed focused and did a great job. They will compete again on March 30th in Rubidoux. The season will end the last two weekends in April with championships. As for the Varsity - 3 players will no longer be in the show. Kevin is in the process of re-writing the marching. The students? attitude and work ethic are really good. They are ready for the next show. April 6 they will be competing at Cal State San Bernardino and then off to Ohio for the Nationals. Orchestra Benefit Dinner Report: Doug Failing reported that the dinner brought in $22,500. They spent approximately $9,000 with a profit of $13,083.00. $2,000 has been donated to the Orchestra Benefit Dinner from the Chinese Booster Club. 2002-2003 Executive Board nominations: The slate of nominations for next year's executive board was presented to the general membership. It was moved, seconded and passed that the slate of Executive Board Members be approved for 2002-2003. The Executive Board approved a recommendation from the Nominating Committee that, although there will be co-Presidents on next year's board, Mike and Polly Green, they will only have one vote and one signer on the checkbook. Financial Report: Sandy DeSurra distributed copies of the financial reports. She thanked Doug Bowers for preparing and mailing the taxes. New Chairs: The membership voted to approve allocation of funds for the purchasing of new chairs. These chairs, for both Band and Orchestra will be stackable. There will be 150 chairs for band; 100 for orchestra; and, 120 for traveling. It was moved, seconded, and passed that $23,000 be allocated for the purchase of chairs for band and orchestra and carts to move them. Car Wash brought in $19,700 (more than budgeted); Festival of Bands brought in $2,400 (more than budgeted); and there was a donation of $4,000 (more than anticipated) therefore equaling $26,000 more than expected for this year. New Board and Old Board budget meeting: April 2nd at 7:30 PM. Current Board will meet at 7:00 PM. Music Camp: Coyla Grumm reported that Music Camp will take place August 25 - August 30, 2002. There is a price increase from $220 to $230. This is still the cheapest camp in town. There are no other large camps around. It would cost approximately $500 to have it at a university. The camp is increasing their costs. Most likely will have to shift some boys to the cabins in the girl's area. There is room for 43 more campers. More chaperones, especially men, are needed. If interested, contact Mike Green. For next year, only 100 orchestra members will be able to go. This will be on a first come - first serve basis. Registration packets will be mailed in May. There will be no cap for Band or Color guard members to attend music camp. Rose Parade Tickets: Mike Green is looking into obtaining tickets for the 2003 Rose Parade. He will report on this at the next meeting. The City of Arcadia will be entering a float to commemorate its 100-year anniversary. The meeting was adjourned at 8:25 PM.
