ARCADIA MUSIC CLUB GENERAL MEETING October 16, 2001 President Nanci Perkins called the meeting to order at 7:10 PM. Minutes Review: the minutes of September 18, 2001 were corrected to show that the $25.00 for the PSAT test must be paid by Friday, October 5th to Terry Schreiner. Nanci introduced Peggy Li the Arcadia Music Club website coordinator and thanked her for an excellent job. Arcadia Music Club membership has increased by 70%. Approximately, $19,000 has been received with $12,288 more that is due to come in. Nanci also sent a thank you to Debbie Riggio who made sure that 360 band students were given their uniforms. Financial Report: Sandy DeSurra reported that PSAT brought in $20,000. Director Reports: Art Farr: Over 720 kids are currently in the elementary school music program. Two new teachers have been added: Mr. Morton and Mr. Halls. Mr. John Dorsch. who is retired, is teaching part-time. 290 Orchestra students had pictures taken on Saturday, October 12, 2001. Tom Forbes: Orchestra potluck was last week with 300-400 people in attendance. Officers are doing an excellent job. First performance will be on October 25 at Pasadena High School at 7:00 PM. All three middle schools and all three high school orchestras will be performing. $3.00 admission. All concerts will be recorded and made into a double CD. Orchestra benefit dinner has been booked at the Arcadia Community Center for February 23rd at 6:00. Hired Billy Hill and the Hillbillies. George Armenta: Color Guard had a successful weekend - won first place for Placentia Parade/Flag and Sweepstakes for the field show. Currently, working on 3rd number - hope to have it done by Mt. Carmel. Hopefully, performance flags will be ready for Mt. Carmel. Three fundraisers: selling candy on campus; dinner at Dominicos for $10.00 per ticket; and, selling Entertainment Books. One student has already sold 68 books! After selling three books - credit goes to individual’s account. Next fundraiser will be Westfield Mall - $5.00 per coupon. This benefits the students 100 percent. World Guard has 19 members. Color Guard will be going to Las Vegas, Riverside, Hayward. They will also be going to Ohio on April 7-13, 2002. Tom Landes: Placentia’s Parade was very hot but the band and color guard did a great job! They received an 80.7 score. Kids saw complimentary video and felt very good about their performance. “Best first show we have ever had!” Kevin Sherrill: The band spent the past two weeks working hard on tempo - the judges tapes did not mention the spots so that meant they did well. Percussion won first place -1/10 pt. behind sweepstakes. The past two weeks the kids have shown a lot of desire to do well. They showed “a lot of heart”. Upcoming events: JV Percussion Section Photo during class on Wednesday, October 17. Bring uniform. JV is working on Mask of Zorro for second part of the year. Also, working on cadences and fundamentals. Monday night fundraiser at Dominicos with Color Guard. Coaches for marching started at music camp and continue every Wednesday night - this is really paying off and the band looks great. Young Ahn: encourages everyone to go to Orchestra concert. Festival of Bands: Len Hundshammer reported that the Festival of Bands would be on November 17, 2001. It has been difficult getting commercial support. Len showed the artwork for T-shirts and pins. The theme is “UNITED WE MARCH”. Advanced field show tickets will be $5.00 now and $8.00 at the door. Field Show competition will be at Citrus College Stadium - this is the finale of the marching season. It takes about 450 people to work this event from 7AM - 11PM. We need volunteers to help. Car Wash: Tom Meikle reported that over 500 band students worked at the car
wash. We have so far banked $28,000. Just received another $15.00 tonight,
thereby making the total in excess of $30,000!! This was the best car wash
we ever had! Washed over 1,000 cars - 300 more than last year. Had over
600 students turn in pledges - 315 students brought in pledges of $60 or
more. These students will each receive a pin. Over $2,000 collected the
day of car wash. Special thank you to Site Coordinators: AEF Scrip Program: Mark Reid is on the board for AEF and is also a color guard parent. He spoke about the various types of Scrip that may be beneficial to the music club. He would like to have a kick off in January to sell Scrip. He recommended that a Scrip Committee be formed and will discuss this in more detail at the executive board meeting. Directories: The membership directories are completed and will be distributed soon. Mt. Carmel: Lea Karch reported that there are two tickets left for the Mt. Carmel field show. Tickets will be mailed to Lea by Thursday, October 17, 2001. She will call Mt. Carmel on Friday if tickets are not received. Lea will then distribute the tickets at Wednesday night practices, football game and parade. 98 tickets have been sold out of 100. Water on buses: John Tallon suggested that there should be water (squeeze bottles and spray bottles) placed on buses in sealed boxes so the kids always have water with them. Ellen Velasquez and Don Riggio volunteered to be in charge of the water. Chaperone cell phone numbers: Nanci would like the cell phone numbers of parents going to Mt. Carmel so they can keep in touch if needed. Chaperone responsibilities: Peggy Li will post the chaperone responsibilities on the website. Meeting was adjourned at 8:50 PM. Next meeting will be November 20, 2001 at 7:00 PM. Respectfully submitted, Cathy Ryne
